LOCATION
WEATHER
In all the cities, you will find almost the same climate. In the morning, it’s cold, and we advise you to wear a jacket and pants. But in the afternoon, the climate changes, and it’s good to put on some shorts because it is really hot and the sun is very strong. At night it is cold and a windy.
WHAT TO SEE
In Ouro Preto, you can visit a lot of churches. One of them, is São Francisco church, where you can find the works of art of Aleijadinho and Ataide.
In Ouro Preto you can visit the Museum of Inconfidencia Mineira where you will find a lot of the history about Tiradentes, and how were things in 17th and 18th century.
The Pillar church is located in Ouro Preto, too. Inside this church, you can’t take pictures, because of the works of art and the paintings in the walls. This church is very rich and there are illusionist paintings.
In Tiradentes, you can visit Bom Jesus de Matosinho church, where you can find the prophets of Aleijadinho, and in front of it there is Via Sacra, it has many works of Aleijadinho and his helpers.
WHAT TO DO – WHERE TO GO
Ouro Preto:You can visit Mina do Chico Rei, wich is very small and narrow, but I need to say that when you are inside there, you'll feel like the slave.
You can go to Casa dos Contos, where you can find the census. Casa dos Contos, between the 17th and 18th century, was used as resource, where, whoever owed money to the government, asked João Rodrigues for help, the proprietary of the Casa dos Contos.
Still in Ouro Preto, you can visit the Municipal Theater of Ouro Preto. The oldest theater of the city. Sometimes, Célia Nazaré, an old woman, tells legends there about her city.
Tiradentes: Inside of the Matriz de Tiradentes church, is possible to watch a light show, where some ‘voices’ explain ALL the history about the work of art that exists there.
A good thing to do is to visit a famous man, Tião Paineira. He works with clay, making vessels, cups, sculptures, and a lot of other things. The history about this man is amazing and it's very interesting to listen to the histories about his life and his achievements.
WHERE TO STAY
In Mariana, you can stay in the Providencia Hotel. The rooms are a little bit small but comfortable.
In Ouro Preto, Pouso das Gerias is a cool place, where you can find big rooms, breakfast with typical food, and a pool if you have some free time. Another option, is Ponta do Morro... it is a big hotel, with beach volleyball court, soccer court and a swimming pool with slides.
WHERE TO EAT- WHAT TO EAT
Remember that we recommended you to visit Casa dos Contos? There you can find a restaurant with the typical food of Minas Gerais.
In Tiradentes, you can find 2 restaurants with a great menu. Panela de Minas and Divino Sabor.
On the way from Congonhas to Tiradentes, you can eat in a good steak house called Churrascaria do Zé.
WHAT TO TAKE
In the luggage:
- Pants (jeans and sweatpants), shorts, and some T-shirts to walk in the city.
- 2 pairs of tennis shoes and 1 pair of slippers.
- 1 bikini/trunks.
- Raincoat.
- Jacket or sweatshirt for the cold days.
HOW TO GET THERE
If you decide to go by plane, you will arrive in Belo Horizonte in Confins airport. From there, you can go to the historical cities by bus or by car.
Going by bus or car could be another option. Go straight from São Paulo to Minas Gerais.
TIPS
It’s a good idea to take extra money with you to buy local crafts. Every historical city has a lot of stores of this kind.
You should try to visit the local restaurants that serve typical food like the ones we mentioned.
In some of the churches you can’t go inside wearing shorts. Make sure to take some pants with you.
In all the churches, you can’t take pictures or film anything. Be careful because they are very strict.
BEST MOMENTS
Our best moments were in Ouro Preto because the churches were more beautiful and the guides were very good, and we learned a lot.
Another good moment of the trip, was when we met an artist: Tião Paineira. He told us a little about his life and he showed us techniques on how to make pottery cups and vases. Just one person from the group could do that, and this person was Maria Anthonia.
But the best of the best was the bus rides, that were a lot of fun.
The most important and rich periods of the Brazilian history was between the 17th and 18th century. In this time, explorers found mines of gold and precious gems located in the mountains in the interior of the country. This region was so-called Minas Gerais. In this region, there are cities with spectacular architecture and art created because of the richness of the mines, and Tiradentes, Mariana and Ouro Preto are called “Historical Cities”.
